Standby Generator Protects a Critical System at Baldor Ozark Plant

Standby Generator Protects a Critical System at Baldor Ozark Plant

In late June 2001, a Midwest heat wave caused a weekend power outage that could have been a major disaster in the varnish process at the Baldor Ozark Plant. When the power came back on the heater did not control the chiller properly and that eventually caused the heat exchanger to fail. Replacing the heat exchanger was expensive but the loss could have been greater had the combination heater/chiller been lost causing the varnish to set up in the tanks and pipes.

Such events may not happen frequently, but they underscore to plant engineers and facility managers that they may want to evaluate the feasibility of a back-up power source on some critical systems. In this case, a permanently installed standby generator will be used to protect the integrity of high-value equipment, prevent unnecessary downtime, and protect the potential loss of over $50,000 worth of related equipment and materials.

To keep their systems protected, the Baldor Ozark Plant installed a Baldor model GLC60 (60kW) natural gas fueled standby generator, which is one of the seven new GLC models ranging in power from 30-100 kilowatts. The GLC60 works in tandem with a fully automatic transfer switch to produce emergency power within seconds after utility power is interrupted, even during the weekends when no one is at the plant.

The Baldor GLC (Gaseous Liquid Cooled) commercial standby generators are powered by dependable General Motors industrial gas engines. These powerful fuel-injected engines are quieted by mufflers mounted out of sight inside weather enclosures that provide safe operation and sleek profiles----features that are important to business owners. A pitched roof prevents water accumulation, and specially designed airflow system using louvers and baffles prevent rain and snow entry and keeps fresh air moving over critical components. All Baldor generator units are production tested and come with a one year or 3000 hours warranty.

Someone once said, “ If you can make a good business decision today, you will be more profitable tomorrow.” A good business decision to install a commercial standby generator was recently made at the Baldor Ozark Plant. To learn more about Baldor Generators, call 1-800-828-4920.
